PEACE IS AN OPEN BOOK
An artistic project by South African artist Annabella Eatherley
"Peace is an Open Book" is a sculptural project designed for display in a public space, with the aim of promoting education and peace.

The concept behind the project is that through reading, one accumulates knowledge, broadens perspectives, and fosters greater understanding. As the late President Nelson Mandela profoundly stated:
"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world."

Peace is an essential foundation for humanity. This sculpture is envisioned as an artistic landmark in parks and town squares—spaces where people gather, stroll, and reflect. Its three-dimensional presence is intended to captivate passersby, inspiring discussion, contemplation, curiosity, knowledge, and critical thought.

The sculpture aims to encourage both children and adults to develop a deeper appreciation for books, promoting reading beyond the digital realm. In today’s world, excessive reliance on electronic media can lead to isolation, distancing people—especially children—from their surroundings.

The artwork incorporates symbolic elements:
The Cat – representing companionship and a sense of connection.
The Dove – a universal emblem of peace, protection, love, freedom, and movement.
Proposed Materials
-
The reclining figure, book and cat will be cast in bronze.
-
The peace dove will be crafted from cut steel or generated using 3D computer modelling.
-
The base table will be made of concrete and will feature a metal plaque acknowledging the companies that contribute to the project.
This sculpture aspires to serve as a beacon of peace and education, reminding us of the power of knowledge and the importance of human connection in a constantly evolving world.
